Selecting the Right Skylight for your Home

When selecting a skylight for your home, there are several factors to consider. Aesthetics aside, you must look at the construction of your building; how thick is your roof? What roofing materials were used? It is also important to take into consideration the climate; do you live in an area where there is excessive rain fall? Are there extreme cold temperatures? For these reasons and more, the shape of your skylight is very important.

Why choose a dome skylight?

A dome skylight sheds water more easily than other models and is ideal for homes located in damp, often rainy areas. Dome skylights are also recommended for houses where there may be heavy ice build-up. Due to its unique shape, residential dome skylights are immune to many of the potential problems caused by water pooling. Do I need flashing for my domed skylight?

Flashing is most typically used on houses with shingled roofs; it has added benefits for those homes in areas that get more than their share of rain. Flashing raises the skylight so that the edges are not flush with the roof, further decreasing the odds for potential water damage. When installing dome skylights for homes, both self-flashing and separate flashing models are available. Our self-flashing domed skylights take the guesswork out of finding the right fit and feature a double dome (bronze over clear Acrylic domes) that is available in your choice of mill, bronze or white finishes.
